Decommissioning an Ammonia Refrigeration System Without Surprises

Retiring an ammonia plant is mostly a sequencing problem. Get the order wrong and you stall demolition, blow the schedule, or create a release.

Start with an accurate inventory

Facilities routinely underestimate their charge. Old drawings are wrong, vessels were added, and oil has accumulated in low points for decades. An accurate inventory drives everything downstream: number of tanker loads, crew days, and disposal or resale planning.

A physical walk of the system beats any spreadsheet. We look at every receiver, accumulator, intercooler and dead leg before committing to a number.

Sequence the work

The order is almost always: survey, isolate, recover liquid, recover vapor, draw down to target pressure, purge or inert as required, then release the system to mechanical contractors for cutting and removal.

Demolition crews cannot begin until the system is verified clear. Scheduling them before the pump out is confirmed complete is the single most common and most expensive planning error we see.

Do not forget the oil

Refrigeration oil saturated with ammonia is its own handling problem. It has to be drained, containerized and managed properly, and the volume is often larger than expected in older plants.

Paperwork that matters

Keep records of the recovered volume, transport manifests, and the disposition of the product. If your facility is covered by Process Safety Management or a Risk Management Plan, decommissioning documentation belongs in that file, and inspectors do ask for it.
